Galileo Galilei
In my opinion, this man deserved a page of his own in my website, after all he did for science. Galileo Galilei was a mathematician, inventor and astronomer who is sometimes called the ‘father of modern science’. Galileo was born in 1564 in the town of Pisa in Italy and was the eldest of seven children. As there was more money at the time if you studied medicine, his father wanted him to be a doctor. While Galileo was at university, he hired the mathematician from the local court, improving his math skills. In 1609, he received a letter about a new invention called the spyglass and he wanted to make his own.
When he did make his telescope, he decided to look at the heavens. While looking at the moon, he discovered that it wasn't smooth as everyone thought, it was actually full of craters, bumps and valleys. He also discovered four moons revolving around Jupiter and that there are more stars that we can't see with the naked eye. As I said about sunspots earlier, Galileo also found out that the Sun has its own rotational period.
When he discovered that the Sun was at the centre of the solar system, the Vatican were angered and they arrested and charged Galileo in 1633. After facing trial, Galileo was put on house arrest for the rest of his life. He published many books about his studies, he even wrote and published books when he was under house arrest. Galileo died in 1642 and in 1992, the Vatican officially cleared him of any wrongdoing as there was more proof of what he discovered, 359 years after he was charged with his studies.
Fun Fact: You can see Galileo’s finger on display at a museum in Italy called the Museo Galileo. Here is a picture below.
(Warning, do not look at this picture if you are squeamish. I am not blamed for your vomiting at this picture.)
